The NEW EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens Pricing
I so want the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens. I have been watching for pricing since it was announced. Today I was googling for it and I see both Amazon and B&H Photo have it listed. Both sites show it for $2,499.00, ouch. The current version of the lens is $1,799.00. Can I justify the price difference? $700 is a lot of money.
I hear that when it’s finally released in April the price will be lower. I have heard anywhere between $1,900 to $2,100. That better, but is still worth the difference? For me it probably is worth it. I have been saving for a while for this lens, what’s a little longer. Also I don’t upgrade often so this focal length will need to be satisfied by a single purchase for the foreseeable future. I might as well get the biggest bang for my dollar.
My hope is to purchase a bigger backpack, a couple of filters, and a Canon EF 1.4x II Extender at the same time I buy the lens. With all of the we are probably talking about spending $2,500 at one time.

I cannot believe the drop in price. This is an amazing zoom lens with an incredible full aperture open @ 2.8. I always keep checking the price of this lens @ amazon and expect a magical change
Besides that your choice of extender is good. Its always great when you get extra things and at the same time sticking with your budget. Please post a detailed review about your musings with the new lens. We are eagerly waiting. Thanks!

I’ve had that same problem, though not on the same scale…when I was shooting Canon I opted for the 50mm f/1.4 over the f/1.8 and loved it. Now that I’m shooting Nikon, I’m awaiting the day when I have the money to buy one of the new 50mm f/1.4 lenses… of course, since I’m not a professional, it’s a lot harder to justify!

I have a feeling that this lens won’t drop too low. With some technology, an item is outdated in a few months, but there’s probably not going to be anything to replace it for a while down the road, so I’m guessing the price will stay fairly stable.

It is definitely an expensive career to be in or hobby to have. My wife and I are both amateur photographers and try to get out as much as possible. Of course we have trouble affording new equipment because it’s not a good source of income as of right now. However, we do other things for extra cash and save that money just for our love. This lens is too expensive for us right now, but our funds are slowly building so maybe we will consider it shortly down the road. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.
