One of my friend's son's is a type 1 diabetic and he goes to a school without a nurse to give his insulin. His teachers call my friend several times a day trying to figure out his insulin dosages. Especially with young and growing kids the dosages are actually really tricky. People could be trained on giving insulin, but they would also need training on signs/symptoms of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and how insulin needs are effected by levels of exercise, growth spurts, illness, etc. It's a lot more than calculating a number. The right insulin levels are necessary for survival... not just getting through the day.

No they are fighting hard to keep their turf at the expense of our kids. The nurses are great, their union couldn't care less about the kids.

An epipen is a fixed dose (already pre-measured) whereas insulin, you give it according to the glucometer reading. Too much injected insulin can put someone in a coma or even kill someone. This is why the nurses were fighting hard.

I think the practice of the nurses association to try and block other school personnel from administering insulin is horrible. I mean, I do understand the nursing groups position that they need to defend potential jobs for their clients and that by not fighting this they would somehow appear to water down the significance of their profession - but really! We are talking about children here who are just trying to make it through the day and the educational system that is not privatized and must suffer government cutbacks. Sign the bill!

It sure does make you wonder. Put it this way, if a school teacher can administer an Epipen to a 4 year old, then they can certainly administer insulin. Great cause and great photos!

All the best for your expedition. We are eagerly waiting to see the photojournals :) I am sure this rally will spread awareness rapidly and many folks would be benefited. Noble cause and a solid effort.
