Covering Diabetes Advocacy Day at the Capital

I will be out covering the Diabetes Advocacy Day at the capital on April 19th. Come out to join me. The event is designed to encourage lawmakers to pass AB 1802, the California bill that would permit voluntary non-medical school personnel to be trained to administer insulin. The bill will be voted on April 20th by the Assembly Business & Professions Committee.

The group Diabetes in CA Schools is heading up the rally.

from the group’s website:

. . . several nursing groups have fought hard to defend their position that only a licensed nursing professional may administer insulin. These nursing groups assert that administering insulin requires “a substantial amount of scientific knowledge and technical skill”. Yet, diabetes medical professionals have testified before lawmakers that the very foundation of modern diabetes care is training non-licensed people to safely administer insulin – parents, grandparents, babysitters, teachers, friends, siblings, and even the children themselves who courageously live with diabetes. The nursing groups have exerted a great deal of energy toward discrediting this expert testimony. One can’t help but wonder…by the nursing groups’ own definition, who could be “other school personnel”?

I will be out there photographing the event so if you see me say hi or at least smile for the camera.

  • It sure does make you wonder. Put it this way, if a school teacher can administer an Epipen to a 4 year old, then they can certainly administer insulin. Great cause and great photos!

  • I think the practice of the nurses association to try and block other school personnel from administering insulin is horrible. I mean, I do understand the nursing groups position that they need to defend potential jobs for their clients and that by not fighting this they would somehow appear to water down the significance of their profession – but really! We are talking about children here who are just trying to make it through the day and the educational system that is not privatized and must suffer government cutbacks. Sign the bill!

  • Diabetes is one of the most fatal disorders confronted by majority of the people these days so we need to share this kind of info to everyone. Thx for this post!

  • An epipen is a fixed dose (already pre-measured) whereas insulin, you give it according to the glucometer reading. Too much injected insulin can put someone in a coma or even kill someone. This is why the nurses were fighting hard.

No they are fighting hard to keep their turf at the expense of our kids. The nurses are great, their union couldn’t care less about the kids.
