Canon 7D Mark II

I have really enjoyed my Canon 7D.  Even though they don’t use the name on first generation products technically I have the Mark I.  Now I hear a Mark II version may be out by the summer of 2011.  Some of the specs include:

  • 26MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • 12 fps continuous shooting
  • 3.2 inch OLED screen
  • Wireless flash control E-TTL III
  • Environmental sealing
  • 19-point AF system (all cross-type)

I would love to pickup a second body and I have really wanted to get a full frame body.  If this new 7D really has these specs I would have tough decision to make.

Also check out our friends at Party Poker.

In addition to the 7D II the Canon 5D III was just released.  This look like a very promising camera body.  It has a better auto focusing system vs the current 7D.  The only drawback is it’s full-frame so you lose some “reach” for sports and the price.  I will wait to see what Canon has to say about the 7D II before I decided what to buy.

  1. May be anybody tested the this model after Canon 5 D Mark II (the model I actually have), especially in the wedding and portrait photography field – what is your general experience ? Any particularities one must be aware of ?

    Congrats Matt!
The 7D its very good but if you thinking to buy the 5D MK2 go for it! Full frame bodys have a better quality, better DOF, and they are wider.

I also have the 7D. Its very good for photos. Very versatile and fast focus.
I use the 7D especially for shooting wedding videos. For videos its not quite good. Its gettting hot very fast. I prefer the 5D MK2 for videos.

    Cheers!

  2. I love my 7D. The upgrades sound great, though I rarely even shoot at the 17 megapixel limit on the one I have. The memory need to shoot and store 26 MP photos … over the top, but I guess not for long.

I’ve seen the Canon 7D and yes, it’s spectacular. Can capture wonderful pictures despite of any weather condition. I’m still on the process of saving few more dollars to have mine.

  5. Its really very effective and the best thing which i find in it is that it comes up with environmental sealing. I must try to pick my own. I am sure it will prove to be the best tool for my photography.

  6. If I’m not mistaken the 7D is quite an expensive camera; what’s your opinion on the Canon 550D as a starting camera?

  8. I have the 500D and it’s small enough to take with me about everywhere. If I would shoot more professionally I would like to get full frame and bigger body like 7D has. I recommend 550D or the new 600D if don’t have a DSLR yet and starting to photography.

  10. I have a Nikon D300s. It’s the one that came trumps for me because although the 7D beats the D300s with it’s 18MP, the performance of the D300s is far superior. Besides, do you even need to have 18 MP? Doesn’t 12MP suffice? Does for me.

The 7D is a wonderful sports camera. When making sports posters 18mp is much better than 12mp. For other types of photography it does not matter as much.

  12. Matt I need your advice. I’m a frequent scuba diver.. I have one underwater camera but I want to have a better one. A camera that can take vivid pictures and more options, mine has a very limited functionality It can’t even take a picture a fast moving fish.

  15. Don’t know when the 7D Mark II is to be released but even the possibility of this is sure to bring down prices of the original 7D, which will makes it a great buy for a lot of people with mid to high level needs without the budget. I have already started seeing more discount kits and bundles with 7Ds around. A good solid all round camera, and I hope the follow-up matches it in its versatility.

  31. My camera is a powershot A530 and I can stioll pull off good pictures compared to some of the newer models, so I am kind of sold on Canons already. My friend has a D 90 and I was wondering how this compares..?

  34. Looks like Canon 7D Mark has great specs too. I was planning to buy Canon DSLR but it’s expensive here in our place. If 7D Mark is much cheaper than DSLR, I might just grab this one.

You don’t lose any “reach” with a FF body ONLY narrower FOV so it appears “zoomed” but not really ;)

    Matt McGuire Reply:

18mp crop it better than 22mp FF for telephoto. That is why sports photogs like crops better.
